7E Youth Academy ran a pupil referral unit for young people excluded from school. Our clients were referred to us from Pupil Connect a special team within Birmingham Education department. There were also pupils referred to us by Connexions and the Youth Service. All our clients had either been permanently excluded from school. Some had severe educational or behavioural special needs. A significant number of our clients had suffered from physical or sexual abuse.

We had qualified tutors teaching young people in Maths, English and other core subjects. Our time of operation was Monday to Friday 9.30 – 3.00 pm. We had a qualified and experienced mentor on site to help the young people with any problems they might be facing.

We worked with our students to gain level 1 and 2 qualifications. Once they completed the course we arranged meetings with our partner organisation South Birmingham College to enrol them on further education course so that could progress in their education. A significant number of our clients were looked after children.

Our objective was to help the young people move onto the next level.

Outcomes

We worked with 47 young people.

46 achieved a Level 1 or 2 qualifications.

27 went on to study Level 2 / 3 courses in further education
